Coalfire is a single-potter studio in Hudson, NY. Thora throws, trims, glazes, and fires every piece herself — which is why there's never a warehouse behind the shop, only whatever came out of the last kiln.
Every piece is thrown by hand from speckled stoneware. No two mugs weigh or sit in the hand quite the same — that's the tell it was made, not stamped.
The ash celadon, the oatmeal, the terracotta — all mixed by eye and by feel, so the amber break on a rim is a decision, not a batch number.
A bisque fire to cone 04, then a glaze fire to cone 6 (about 2,232°F) with a two-day cool. That's the range that makes a piece dishwasher-tough and food-safe.
This is what came out of the last kiln — a small, numbered run. Nothing here restocks; when a piece sells, the next one is on the wheel, not on a shelf.

Because it's all handmade in small batches — when a piece sells out, the next one is on the wheel, not in a warehouse. A new batch of the everyday pieces lands about every two weeks; sign in and we'll email you when your size and glaze are back.
Yes, within reason. Custom sets (say, eight matching plates) take one to two firing cycles — usually 3–5 weeks — and we take a small deposit up front. Send what you have in mind and we'll tell you honestly whether the glaze does what you're picturing.
Every piece is fired to cone 6 and finished in food-safe, lead-free glazes — dishwasher-, microwave-, and oven-safe (no broiler). A quick hand-wash keeps the glaze brightest, but nothing here is too precious to use.
Double-boxed, wrapped by hand, and insured. Breakage in transit is rare, but if a piece arrives cracked, send a photo within seven days and we'll remake or refund it — you keep the pieces that survived.
